Sunrise At Mirror Lake
Sunrise At Mirror Lake artwork

Government Camp, Oregon.

I admit that some photographs are easy to create. This is not one of those. Abbie and I had to get up far before sunrise and trek forty-five minutes through a pitch black forest with only one head lamp. The batteries ran out on the other. And not being too familiar with the local wildlife of Oregon, I actually had real concerns of running across an angry bear. We had not hiked the trail either so we weren't quite sure how far it was or if it would be worth it. The trail was well-marked but had a respectable incline that caused us to pause for a breather every now and then. I used that time to listen for threatening growls.

As the first light of dawn began to break, we could finally see the reflections of Mirror Lake through the thick brush to our right. On the south edge of the small lake was a clearing with a good vantage point of Mount Hood rising just above the tree line. The clouds were perfect and I suspected we were about to have front row seats to a spectacular light show.

As the sun came closer to the horizon, the clouds caught fire and reflected the red-orange glow back down onto us, bathing everything in an eerie light. I quickly began to work the camera, lens, and tripod, getting as many different compositions as I could think of. Within 30 seconds, the glow was gone and the clouds had lost their color. I relaxed though, knowing the extra research and planning, getting up early and hiking through the anxiety-inducing pitch black forest had all been worth it. I had the shot.
